Recent major upgrading of Knock Basilica (opened in 1976 - 3,000 sqm) has transformed a large cold space with harsh finishes into a warm meditative place for Pilgrims, where barriers between congregation and celebrant have been removed and levels of comfort and accessibility hugely improved.
All internal finishes were replaced, a new marble sanctuary constructed, with new marble, granite, rubber, and oak finishes to floors and walls, and new oak ceilings over the Sanctuary and curving plaster shells over the 5 Chapels. New pilgrim-friendly main entrances were provided, the Blessed Sacrament Chapel was redesigned, and new artworks on the themes of Apparition and Pilgrimage were integrated into the building including a very large mosaic showing the Apparition, and new painted glass screens, while existing artworks were retained.
Client Comments - “Wejchert Architects provided an excellent service, the building is now top quality and we would like to underline the excellent cooperation between Design Team led by the Architect and enormous engagement during all stages of the project.”
